Selena Gomez Is Helping Amplify Black Voices With Instagram Takeover

On Thursday (June 4), Selena Gomez announced her next step in supporting the Black community.

Previously, Gomez posted a statement following the murder of George Floyd writing, “Too many black lives have been taken from us for far too long. They deserve better. They deserve to be heard. We all need to do better and not sit in silence as this injustice continues.”

With 178 million followers, the singer is one of the most-followed people on Instagram and Gomez is deciding to use that number to amplify Black voices by letting influential Black activists take over her Instagram account!

“After thinking about how best to use my social media, I decided that we all need to hear more from Black voices,” she wrote. “Over the next few days I will be highlighting influentials leaders and giving them a chance to take over my Instagram so that they can speak directly to all of us.”

She continued: “We all have an obligation to do better and we can start by listening with an open heart and mind.”

Gomez's note is paired with a piece of artwork titled “Speak With Confidence” by artist Charly Palmer.

In addition to handing over her platform to Black activists, Gomez announced that her beauty line, Rare, made donations to two organizations, The Bail Project and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. “We want to send a clear message to the peaceful protesters that are in the streets fighting for justice that we are proud to stand with you,” she wrote on Rare's page.

Rare also shared slides featuring ways to help including signing petitions, donating, and staying up-to-date by following important accounts.
